Frequently asked questions
How many people have my name in the United States?
Type your first name into the tool: it shows how many babies have been given that name in the United States since records began, its rank among the most given names, its peak year and the year before which half of its bearers were born.
Is this the number of people alive today?
No. It counts births recorded by the Social Security Administration. For an older name, many bearers are no longer alive; for a recent name, the figure is close to the number of people who have it today.
Where do the figures come from?
From the Social Security Administration, which publishes every name given to at least 5 babies a year in the United States since 1880. Names given fewer than 5 times in a year are not counted that year.
What is the most common first name in the United States?
Among the names we cover, the most given name since records began is James, with 5,262,396 babies, ahead of John and Robert.
